At On Deck, our mission is to combine skilled engineers and a knowledgeable sales force to bring innovation to small business financing. Since we already gave a sneak peek into life on the Sales Team, we sat down with Matthew Early to learn what it’s really like to be an Engineer at On Deck.

1. Explain what you do in your role with On Deck.

I develop Java solutions for the Core Team at On Deck. The core team is responsible for the Loan Servicing Platform, our engine for processing loans and what makes accessing capital for the small businesses we serve simple, fast and easy.

2. Why did you decide to join On Deck?

Before joining On Deck I worked at a big bank where I was frustrated by being a small piece of a massive corporation. I assumed all jobs came with their own frustrations, but I decided to go on a couple of interviews anyway. After meeting with some people at On Deck, I couldn’t believe their level of enthusiasm. It was obvious to me that it’s a place that is genuinely excited about technology with a dedication to solving problems in the right way with the right tools. And on top of that, I could tell it’s a really fun place where people actually enjoy coming into work.

3. In your opinion, what is the best part about working at On Deck?

Developers are given time to work on projects that interest them, whether it be learning a new skill or creating a prototype for something that can help better provide small businesses capital. This creates an atmosphere where everyone’s ideas are extremely valued. It can be really rewarding when you think of something cool and get to share it with the group.

4. What advice would you give to someone looking to join the company?

Come ready to work hard, learn a lot and have some fun. Make sure to ask people what they’re working on because they’ll be happy to talk about it and you’ll get a chance to see what else is going on outside of your immediate team.

5. What would someone be surprised to know about On Deck?

Every couple of weeks we do an On Deck I/O event, where someone will talk about a topic of interest that they know about and others are interested in. It’s a really relaxed environment to learn something new, and we even open up a couple of beers while we do it!
